Following the success of the first exhibition of the Hippo Service held in New York, Sotheby's is delighted to present the exhibition in its London saleroom at Olympia

The Hippo Service, commissioned from Royal Copenhagen by Richard Baron Cohen is probably the most important commissioned service the last 100 years. Painted on the 'Flora Danica' shape with its distinctive serrated rim, the service comprises 144 pieces hand painted with 303 different views of hippopotamuses, alone or in family groups, taken from original photographs of hippos in a 101 zoos from 33 countries around the world. Each piece is titled on the reverse in the distinctive Royal Copenhagen script with the name of the hippo or hippos, the name of the zoo and its home city and country.

Richard Baron Cohen is a collector of important antique neoclassical porcelain, as well as a longstanding member of Hippolotofus — The International Hippo Society — and it is the combination of these two interests that has provided the inspiration for the Hippopotamus Service.

Having long admired the design and quality of Royal Copenhagen's well-known Flora Danica service, the factory was chosen by Cohen to undertake his commission as he believed that only Royal Copenhagen decorators had the precision painting skills necessary to successfully undertake such a project. The result is a service unparalleled in modern times, which continues a tradition of commissioned services that can be traced back to the early Eighteenth Century.

Zwischen reichen Ornamenten gibt es minutiös gemalte Geschichten zu entdecken, die beste Unterhaltung versprechen: ein Pferderennen in Paris um 1811, hüftschwingende Tänzerinnen auf Haiti 1821, die Entdeckung der Eisinseln durch Captain Cook oder ein Überfall auf Wanderer im Schwarzwald. Eine spektakuläre amerikanische Privatsammlung klassizistischer Porzellane der Manufakturen Wien, Berlin und Sèvres steht im Zentrum der Ausstellung, die erstmals die übergreifenden Verbindungen der drei Manufakturen zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts darstellt. Die mit großem Enthusiasmus, gleichwohl in aller Stille in den vergangenen fünfzehn Jahren geformte "Twinight Collection New York" vermittelt anhand kostbarer Porzellane - fast ausnahmslos königliche bzw. kaiserliche Geschenke - künstlerische Einflüsse und technische Innovationen jener Epoche. Zahlreiche Entwürfe und Vorlagen aus dem KPM-Archiv (Land Berlin) ergänzen die Kunstwerke aus Porzellan. Nach Berlin wird die Ausstellung in verkleinerter Form zu sehen sein in: Wien, Liechtenstein Museum 16. November 2007 bis 11. Februar 2008 New York, Metropolitan Museum of Art 9.
