Michael Ancher (1849-1927)
Michael Ancher came to Skagen in 1874 at the age of 25, and he was the only one of the visiting artists who settled permanently in the
town. He grew up on the island of Bornholm, and at the age of 16, he began his apprenticeship as a clerk at the Kalø Manor in Djursland.
Here, he began to draw and paint in his spare time, and in 1871 he was accepted as a student at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen.
Here, he met Karl Madsen, among others, who encouraged him to go to Skagen. In 1877, he was engaged to Anna Brøndum, and they married in 1880, and during their first years of
marriage, the couple lived in the Garden House. After the birth of their daughter Helga in 1883, the family moved to Markvej in Skagen. Michael Ancher is known for his portrayals of Skagen's heroic fishermen and for his dramatic paintings of the fishermen's work at
sea. In his large figure paintings he combines the classic compositional principles of historic paintings with a fascinating
realism. In the early 20th century, Michael Ancher took an active part in the founding of Skagens Museum, but he died in 1927, the year before its official
opening.

Anna Ancher was the only Skagen Painter who was born and raised in Skagen. She was the daughter of Ane Hedvig and Erik Brøndum, the proprietor of the town's inn and merchant's shop. She was given her first painting lessons by Karl Madsen, Viggo Johansen and Michael Ancher who came to Skagen in the 1870's. During the winters of 1875-78, she attended Vilhelm Kyhn's school of painting for women in Copenhagen. In 1877, Michael and Anna were
engaged, and they married in 1880. They had a daughter, Helga, in 1883 and lived together in Skagen for the rest of their lives. From 1884, they lived in the house on Markvej, which has now been turned into the museum Michael and Anna Ancher's House. Anna Ancher enjoyed a unique artistic
career, not least considering that she was a woman in an age where it was uncommon for women to get an artistic education – they were not even granted access to the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. She had her debut as an artist at Charlottenborg in Copenhagen in 1880 and quickly became highly successful as a
painter. Her favourite motif was the near surroundings – the home, the world of women and
children, and she is the only Skagen Painter who has repeatedly portrayed religious life in Skagen.

Philipsen,
Theodor Esbern, 1840-1920, maler.
Theodor
Madsen. P. ejede desuden et af hans billeder. Saltholmbillederne og
skovbillederne fra bl.a.
uspolerede natur. Kilde Weilbach

Jensen, Johan Laurentz. (1800-1856). Broget over
painter 1825-1840. Only
painter fruits and flowers, which is also what the most famous Danish
flower painter painted as oil paintings. (signatur 32)
Johan Laurentz Jensen (1800-1856) is an important well-listed artist. He went to the Academy of Fine Art in Copenhagen and was a student of Eckersberg and the flower painter C.D. Fritzsch. He became a titular professor by the academy in 1835. He exhibited at Charlottenborg and in Rome in 1901. His works have in newer time been exhibited at Statens Museum for Kunst, Kunstindustrimuseet and in Netherlands, London and Hirsh and Adler Gal. New York. He is represented in Statens Museum for Kunst and Thorvaldsens Museum. I.L. Jensen traveled in 1822 on a study journey to Germany, the Netherlands and France (Paris) supported by prince Christian Frederik the later king Christian VIII. In Paris he studied by Gerard and Corneille van Spaendonck, two Dutch brothers who were famous for their flower paintings. When he returned to Denmark he became a member of the academy and renewed the tradition in flower painting after the two old masters J.L. Camradt and C.D. Fritzsch. The genre had its root in the Dutch painting from the 17th century, which the French artists continued in the 18th century. There were certain rules for a flower painting; it should be arranged where a darker background would serve to contrast the colors of the flowers. The symbolism of the flowers was important, the rose very popular often mixed with lilies and myrtle. I.L. Jensen often placed the flowers on a plate, a basket or in a garland. He would frequently go to Rosenborg in order to study rare sorts of flowers but he also sometimes choose wild flowers or strawberries and fruits. In his late works one can also find exotic birds and nature morte in his works. He was an extremely popular painter who did works for the kings court as well e.g. in Bernstoffs Palae where he decorated the dining hall for princess Caroline and prince Ferdinand. In the end of the last century his art had an international breakthrough. But maybe even more important he started a painting school and many female artists were his student, among them Louise of Hessen who later became king Christian IX's queen. Some of his students were at his own high level.
